COE Graduation 2009 - A memorable event for Beta Epsilon

Graduation 2009 is historic for Beta Epsilon  for two reasons.

This is the year, after more than 25 years,  that a brod graduates with magna cum laude honors .

This is also the first time since 1988 that a Betan relative, a daughter of a Betan, is the recipient of the Dominador Ilio Award for the Most Outstanding All-Around Graduating Student. We hope that next time a Betan brod would be the recipient.

This reminds us to intensify our support for the Beta Epsilon Scholarship program. Because of the increasing number of resident brods with good scholastic standings, our scholarship fund has been depleted substantially. Brods are encouraged to send in their contributions to shore up the funding for more Betan scholars.

Please contact the scholarship group head, Ojie Alzona.

Then Jeffrey and his parents step aside and wait to be called again to receive the J.V. Angeles Award for Excellence in Water Resources Engineerg. Incidentally, J. V. Angeles is a Betan.

Jeffrey and his parents go up the stage one more time to receive his medal as magna cum laude graduate and the GMA medal for excellent

Unfortunately, his father, probably in his excitement, had his back

to the photographers when he was putting on the medals on Jeffrey.

Congratulations to Brod Jeffrey and to the proud parents!

Brod Rico Trinidad, UPAE President and Brod Roger Buendia, UPAE vice president, preside over the ceremony. The scene reminds you of a Beta Epsilon gathering on Family Day

Tina and proud parents return to the stage to pick up the Brod Dominador I. Ilio Award for the Most Outstanding All-Around Graduating Student.

This time UPAE Presdient Brod Rico and BEAI Prssident Brod Roger and Brod Chicho are joined by Brod Pol Abis, chair of ERDF which manages the award.

Again, Tina and parents return to the stage to receive her medal

as summa cum laude graduate and also the GMA medal for excellence.

Another Betanak, Gijo, was happily escorted by proud parents Chicho and Riza.

He graduated with a BSIE degree, cum laude, with a grade that is close to a magna cum laude honors.

Leony's comment: Doble Alas ang panalo ng Mantaring family! Congrats again, Chicho, Riza, Greg and Tina!

BEAI President Roger Buendia was on stage for 4 hours, in a long row of seats with Brods Joel, Pol and Rico.

Leony had to be there as a member of the faculty, but he made use of his time to take photos even when he was supposed to congratulate the graduates with handshakes. Well,  he did congratulate the graduates by capturing their happy faces into his camera card. His students probably think that they can ask him for the high resolution photos --. yes, Leony will gladly furnish them with those valued souvenirs IF they donate to the Beta Epsilon Scholarship Fund or they apply for membership when they take their graduate studies.

Brods,

I just came from the Engineering graduation ceremony, which was held at the UP Theater. It took 4 hours to complete the ceremony with more than 500 graduates participating. There were actually a little bit more than 50% female graduates for this year.

Despite the long 4 hours, I would say it was worth my time to participate in the occasion since it was a momentous event for the brotherhood as the awards and recognition were filled with Betans and Betanettes.

Allow me to give you a picture of the occasion:

1) Not only were there 4 Betans who graduated but Jeffrey Presinede was given the honor of Magna Cumlaude. He was also a recipient of 2 special awards;

2) Chicho and Rizza Mantaring frequented the stage as their daughter was not only Suma Cumlaude but was also a recipient of 2 special awards (one of them was the Dominador I. Ilio Award for Overall outstanding student) plus a President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo award. Moreover, their son also graduated with the honor of Cumlaude;

3) Our former Sweetheart, Miam Mole-Banzon, also had a daughter graduating with the honor of Cumlaude;

4) Betans were all over the stage with Doc Pol Abis, Rico Trindad, Joel Marciano, Leony Liongson and myself playing significant roles in the event;

5) And to top it all, it was only our brotherhood, the Beta Epsilon Fraternity, who was mentioned and recognized in the ceremony as a result of our contribution through the Dominador I. Ilio Award.

Indeed, it made me proud to be a Betan. CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL!!!

I'm sure MonR and Leony were able to capture those glorious moments through their lens... abangan!!!

BETA EPSILON, MABUHAY!!!

Ojie,

May I also add that Christina Marianne G. Mantaring - the daughter of our brod Chicho Mantaring - is the recipient of the Dom Ilio Award for Most Outstanding All-Around Graduating Student and the UP Alumni Engineers Presidential Award for Outstanding Leadership.

 Brods,

I heard that Jeffrey Presinede 06 is graduating magna cum laude in CE. If  he  is, a BIG CONGRATULATIONS to him. Jeffrey has been a consistent  beneficiary  of the BE FIRST incentives program for scholastic excellence the past 2 to  3  years.

 MABUHAY KA BROD. You made us proud.

The previous Betan magna cum laude grads were Leonardo Q. Liongson 67, way back in the early 70s (BSChe), and Genaro "Jinggoy" Mempin 78 in the early 80s (BSIE).

P.S. The scholastic excellence fund of the BE FIRST Program is almost depleted. May we request for voluntary donations from generous brods to beef up the fund?Chicho,

Ed,

Jeffrey was recruited in 2006 under the MEBship of Chet Ramirez...can't recall though who was the BC Chair at that time.

Jeffrey is an interesting case in the sense that in his first year he was not in UP Diliman. He was a transferee from UP Los Banos...did very well there, and continued to do well when he transferred to Diliman.

We do have two MCL/CL candidates in the last batch, one is incoming 3rd year in IE, and the other one is incoming 4th year in CE. I expect them to be applying for the incentives once their 2nd sem grades are out. For many years, the cut-off grade was 2.5. but was increased to 2.0 to really promote academic excellence.

Halu Chicho,

Just downloaded the photos from the camera.

I have 54 photos of the graduation rites, more than 200 MB. Nakakatuwa kasing kodakan ang masasayang eksena ninyo which also explains why I have about the same number of photos of Brod Jefrey the magna boy.

I will post some tonite in the BE website. For your copies, I will burn them into a CD. I am attending the UP graduation on the Sunday and can give it to you. I am sure you will be there.

I always like to save into the camera memory card such happy scenes of young people graduating and ready to face the world with much confidence and hope even if they know there are many twists and turns since the road ahead is not a straight boulevard. The valedictorian captured that spirit and attitude when she told her batch: "We have a nation to build" .

The young graduates are like the sun at eight or nine in the morning, fresh and full of promise. And the joy in the faces of the parents, relatives and friends: It spreads cheers to everybody. Kakatuwa talaga, and we all share in their joy. Such is life..

subject [be_matters] Thank you to all for your congratulations.

Dear Brods,

I am overwhelmed by all the congratulatory messages I have been receiving from all the brods. Thank you very much. Yesterday was a momentous occasion for Riza and me. It was a double celebration. Not only did my daughter Tina graduate summa cum laude, my son Gijo graduated cum laude and was rather close to making magna.

I reiterate my congratulations to Jeffrey. I hope his feat rekindles the tradition of academic excellence in our fraternity.

Ojie,

I am committing P10,000 to BE's Scholastic Excellence fund. You can count on additional contributions from me in the years to come as long as the program remains active.
