AHS61 classmate Emma was a Teacher Recognition Awardee last May in the state of New Jersey. It is a great honor because, as the Teacher Recognition Committee Chair said, the Award "is not a popularity contest, but a peer-to-peer recognition effort that seeks to celebrate high standards, consummate dedication and hard work: all worthy of recognition." We can imagine the dedicated and competent effort that Emma put in through the years, and this may even be an understatement. This reminds us once again that teaching is indeed a very noble profession. At the same time that we salute Emma, we cannot but help salute also our excellent high school teachers.

Mabuhay ka, Emma! You make your country and your AHS61 batchmates proud!

What the Teacher Recognition Award is about

A Message from Eileen Shafer, Chair - Teacher Recognition Committee

Thousands of Paterson teachers work diligently to deliver their best in the classroom throughout the school year.  This annual event is one way that we recognize and celebrate those who go the extra distance to positively impact the lives of students.

It is important to know that the recipients of the Teacher Recognition Award are selected by their colleagues, through a rigorous process that begins at the school level.  This is not a popularity contest, but a peer-to-peer recognition effort that seeks to celebrate high standards, consummate dedication and hard work: all worthy of recognition.

I want to congratulate all of our 2007 winners and encourage every teacher in this district to strive their hardest and do their best.  When we positively impact the lives of our students, we are all winners in the world of education.

(underlining by Mon, fan of Emma, like every one in AHS61)

Assistant Superintendent for Human Resources

Emma's School #16 - 115 years of educating the young

In the annals of Paterson history and folklore, School #16 began life as an elegant mansion built in the late 1800's and owned by Annie Brace and her family. It was presented to the school district in 1891 to be used as a school. At one time, there was a third floor which has been removed and never replaced. On April 2005 the school celebrated its 115 birthday with an ice cream party for the school.

School #16 currently services 291 first through fourth grade students. There are two regular English speaking classrooms per grade level and one bilingual class per grade for a total of 12 classes. Because of our small size, we pride ourselves in providing personalized attention to the educational and emotional needs of our students. We and their families feel they are in a very safe environment where they can grow and learn under the guidance of a caring and concerned staff. This knowledge assists the staff in understanding the needs and abilities of each child.

Emma is escorted by their principal as she walks to the podium to receive the award.

An aside: I remember Teacher Sir Ernesto Terrado's definition of a PRINCIPAL:  a prince who is a pal to everyone.
